For the question that was asked in per #4. Here is the answer I found for you.

The orbital labels s, p, d, and f originate from a now-discredited system of categorizing spectral lines as sharp, principal, diffuse, and fundamental, based on their observed fine structure. When the first four types of orbitals were described, they were associated with these spectral line types, but there were no other names.

Hello Parents, I have been posting so much stuff on Edmodo, and the students seem to enjoy it so much, that I have been missing out on posting on blogger. Well I am back.

Here you go..
Periods a-4 and c-6
Monday Homework was that the students were to read the lab posted on edmodo and answer the pre lab questions.
Tuesday: The students made some Physical and Chemical Changes in the lab and for homework they had some questions to answer about them.
Wednesday: We talked about another technique that is called distillation. The students were assigned a pre lab to read and pre lab questions to answer. The document is available on the edmodo site.
Thursday: We are going to carry out our lab work that was assigned on Wedneday. This lab will take two days.
Friday: We will finish the lab, and the students will answer the questions and complete the lab report by TUESDAY

Period 8
Tuesday the students worked on developing a lab procedure that will help them separate a salt and sand mixture. The procedure was worked on in class, and they must refine the procedure for homework.
Wednesday The students started to follow their salt and sand procedure in class. They worked until they had followed half of their lab procedure. They will continue their separation techniques in class on Thursday.
Thursday The students will complete their lab that was assigned on Wednesday. They will answer the 8 questions that are attached at the end of the lab.
Friday: We will do some Halloween science.

Tuesday-Safety Quiz. The magic number here is 80%. You must get at least an 80% to continue on in the course. I will work with you if you did not get there. After the Quiz, we will start with conversions and measurement. There will not be homework
Wednesday-Retake the safety quiz and continue with Measurement and Conversions. We will continue our work with both measurements and conversions. Homework will be a conversions practice sheet. You will be assigned your book and given instructions for the online component of the book. Fill in the form on Edmodo with your book number.
Thursday- More practice and discussion of Scientific Notation, Measurement and Conversion. Homework is 36 conversion practice problems.
Friday-We will review the measurement practice sheet and work on our measurement and conversion paper slide movie. If your phone shoots video, or your carry a digital camera that can shoot video, that is all we need! Bring it to class! Homework will be to finish the paper slide video if not done in school. The video will be uploaded to edmodo.com by Monday morning.

8th Period Only:

I want to see if we could move water from one location to the other against gravity without touching the flask or beaker. Will you make it happen? Lets see! The sheet for this is available on edmodo. Complete the sheet, and email it, print it, or drop it on edmodo.
Friday: You need to have submitted a copy of the online book account info by now. You will start working in your groups to make a paper slide video about measurement and conversions. If you have a phone that shoots video or a digital camera that can shoot video, feel free to bring it to class.

It seems like yesterday that we were saying goodbye for the summer. A few weeks of playing in the sun has now past and we are ready for a new school year. Charged up and ready to take the leap to the high school. I am excited to return to school this year and very excited for all of the possibilities this year can bring! This is going to be a great year that will be full of new experiences and feelings.

This year, you and your parents will use this website to stay connected to what is going on in class. In addition to this site, you will also use Edmodo.com. You should go there and sign up for an account now...infact, it is your homework for the first night of school.
Your homework’s will be posted on edmodo; you will have assignments, schedules, movies to preview, etc on this site. You should visit this site once a day at least. In class I will announce any changes to the site, but you must still pay attention to the directions given in class as well as the site.

If for any reason, you do not have access to the website from home, there are multiple opportunities to view the site in school, at the library, or at a friend’s house.

Also, you may want to take this opportunity to join the Google group that I set up for this class. The address is here. This is a place where we can have discussion, or I can answer questions for a larger group through the discussion board.

The final weeks at school always feel like the end of a roller coaster ride. We have gone through the unfamiliar beginning of waiting in line and getting in the coaster car, which is the beginning of September. We then do a long climb which is October to about winter holiday time. We then go down a huge hill, and have all sorts of twists and turns and maybe a flip or two which brings us from the holidays up until maybe May or so. At the end of the ride, we hit the last few ups and downs that make our stomach feel funny, and then we pull back into the station and hit the breaks and we are allowed free.
At this point we are rolling into the station. You are thinking about all we did while pulling at the lap bar trying to escape so you could run free to jump on the next ride. The last few feet are as important as the first few, if you were to leave the ride early, or jump off of the car, you would not have the same experience as someone who rode it all the way out and you might regret that. Please make sure that you stick with the rest of us and ride into the station house and get out with the rest.

All of this is said to make sure that you stick with us, and make sure you work on everything that we have going forward. The review for the exam should start today (Tuesday), so that we have enough time to get everything done. Please make sure you are an active participant in the review.

This is the last call for any work you may have to turn in to me. Your grades will be pretty much finalized this weekend. I will accept late work till Wednesday, but not after that.

Use this week to avoid the heat by sitting in the AC and prepping for your finals. They should not stress you out, you should go into them like any other school day as long as you prepare before hand.

If you want to start looking at topics that will be on the test. This is a good document to look at. More or less, all of the vocabulary we covered this semester is on there.

Start studying now! Use this final review to work on your prep.

For the test, you should understand Mirrors, reflection, refraction, and Snell's law.
To complete the review work from last night and today, you should understand that the index of refraction can be determined by dividing the speed of light (c) by the speed of light in the material. Because most of you understand algebra, then you know you can also determine the speed of light in a material as long as you have the index of refraction number.
We can also detemine the angle of the light by following snells law. which is n1(SineAngle1)=n2(sineAngle2). If you have three parts, you can figure out the rest.

If you want to start looking at topics that will be on the Final This is a good document to look at. More or less, all of the vocabulary we covered this semester is on there.

So as of yesterday (Wednesday) you now have your partner for the vodcast project and the section of the chapter that you will be working on. This rubric is a bit more detailed than the last one, but I feel that it will guide you along your journey much better than a simpler one.
Remember that you should be working with your partner everyday to ensure that you are ready to start the editing process next Wednesday. Remember that I will not accept any late work or any excuses about a lack of time for the project. It is due on Tuesday May 16th We will start to work on the editing this on next Wednesday, so you should use your time between now and then to create your vision and start to film it.

Here are some more questions that will help you get ready for the test on Thursday. They are due for HW tomorrow. page 420 in packet I gave you 20-23 and the think and explain section 7-10.

Here are some examples of the word problems I would give you.
1. Say we could stand on a distant star and shine a flashlight. If the star is 250 light years away, how long will it be until we see the light? How many Km is this away from us?
2. If red has a wavelength of 700nm and blue has a wavelength of 450 nm how much faster does blue light travel than red light? What is the amount of difference between their frequencies? (look up the difference between a nanometer and a meter do not email me for that).
3. Light is traveling for four earth years and then finally reaches Earth. How far away is the light source in Km?
4. You are watching a display of fireworks when your favorite display goes up. After it explodes at an altitude of 250m from the surface of the earth, how long will it take for you to see it?
5. The frequency of a microwave is 9.5 x 10^9Hz. What is the wavelength that a microwave operates at?

Polarized Light

If you want to look at some industry polarization info, here is a link to the Oakley site on polarized light.

There will be a test on Thursday. This will be based on the light chapter you have studied so far.

If you need to download smart notes, go here.A little birdy told me that you need to study the electromagnetic spectrum and know what the parts of it are used for, the order of their wavelengths, etc. The birdy also let me know that you will need to know about transparent, opaque, and translucent materials. It would also be helpful to know about polarization of light. The last few chirps were something about the wave/particle properties of light, and how fast they go.

Pretty good use of advertising
If you get chance, read this article. It is what I am always trying to get across to you, and hopefully someday you will understand this.

I showed an example of where I, mathmatically, increased the speed by double to see if the frequency would change. It can be done mathmatically, but it is not true. The reason why it is not true is because of the inverse relationship frequency and wavelength have. If the frequency is increased, the wavelength must decrease by the same amount.

Here is an example.

Wavelength = 14m

frequency = 10 hz

Speed = 140m/s

If I double wavelength, the frequency will be cut in half, which gives us the same speed of the wave.

Wavelength = 28 m

frequency = 5 hz

Speed = 140 m/s

Here is an electronic copy of the review. Remember, you need to complete this before coming to school on Monday the 26th. I suggest that you go through the entire packet and answer what you can on one pass, then go back with your notes or a book and do the rest. That is a much more effective strategy than trying to tackle it all at once. Also break it into sections. Do not try to do the entire thing in one sitting, or even worse Sunday night. You should have started yesterday, but take an hour a day or even 45 minutes a day and you should have this done in time for Monday. Try to avoid "working with a friend" which can sometimes turn into one person doing the work. If it is a mutual effort and you are both getting something out of it, that is fine, but be honest with yourself in your preparation.

Hello,

Lets catch our breath here, and take a look at where we have been and where we are going. I want to make sure that everyone understands what is due at this point in the quarter. Believe it or not, mid-marks are coming soon!

Today you should have turned in your answers to the periodic table activity.

Last Friday you should have turned in your Periodic Table of Elephants, and your Line Emmision Spectra Lab.

Last Wednesday your group should have finished the flame lab.

If you have no idea what the above info means, you need to see me to get caught up on your work. Remember that every day something is late, you drop 10%. After 10 days, it is a zero. Salt and Sand

To answer number 5 and 6 on the lab, you may want to think of the wet sand that you ended up with, which I would hope you know has greater mass than the original mixture. The salt that is left over will be too little for you to acuraty measure, so no real measurements are needed, therefore, I am not posting any of the equations you saw in class. You just need to understand where the mases come from, not what they really are.

This week we are going to finish the lab today (Monday) and your homework for tonight is to work on the procedure. Here are the directions.

You will try to develop a technique for separating salt from sand. You will write a complete procedure that includes individual steps to follow by your group. You cannot complete steps that you did not express in your procedure! Include a materials list, a test procedure to verify you made a separation and make sure that your procedure is clear enough to follow by everyone.

If you are looking like this guy after the lab, no need to worry, you will work on the questions tonight and tomorrow in class to get this all straight. Also...he def. did not have me for class because if he is measuring, he is doing it all wrong.

Because we did not use flat soda, your density was off by a bit. You should multipy your density by a factor of 1.08 to get the proper density. An example would be experimental density of soda = 0.96g/ml. Multiply that number by 1.08 = 1.0368g/ml. Use that number and the graph you made to find the experimental percent of sugar per ml.

Please do not leave your lab stations a mess when you walk away. Everyone has an equal job in cleaning up. Some students did not think that clean up was an important part of lab today and left their station like this. They will drop 20%from their lab grade. Any furhter blatent infractions will cost members of this group their entire grade.

I hope that many of you understand what I am talking about when I tell you not to be afraid of numbers. You just have to learn how to work with them. If you learn what they mean, then you will not freeze up when you see questions like the balloon question that really got most of you. Also make sure that you know how to use the calculator as a tool, not a brain. You are much smarter than your calculator!

I told you that I needed to change a few things up this week, and believe me, as much as you wanted to do the soda lab, you would probably like for me to slow up the pace a little bit, that is why you had tonight off from homework.

If you have missed HW at all, make sure it is getting in. If we start to miss now, there is going to be a bunch of work to make up to keep up with your scores. The policy is that you drop 10% for each day your work is late (including weekends). I can not accept work that is older than 5 days. Missed work can really start to pull your grade down. One of my major goals this year is to keep up with grading. So far, so good. Keep checking the home access site for your up to date grade.

Monday: We will work on Physical Properties. For Homework: Bring a drink to school tomorrow. Something like coke, gatoraide, ginger ale, most fruit juices (not V8), etc will work. Please do not bring sugar free drinks. You don't have to really drink them, so if you do not drink regular soda, or drinks with sugar, you do not have to worry.
You also need to read pages 45-48 and do questiosn 1,2,4,6,8 on page 51 in your book. You really do not need to bring your book the rest of the week.
Tuesday: We will look at density much closer with some in class work and homework. Homework are the pre-lab questions.

Well now that you have negotiated the halls and have felt your way around the building for a days with the scary upperclassmen, you should start to feel at home in the HS.
On Tuesday you received your online text book instructions and some homework. Please make sure that you have already completed that homework. If you lost it, I have made a link to it here. I will not always do that, but it is a good bet that I will have it here for you to check out.

Yesterday (Thursday): We will go over some safety issues in the chemistry room and built a lab station. If you did not complete that homework yet, you need to get it in. Here is a copy of it.

Friday: We took the quiz and started some work on the SI system.

Also, I hope everyone has their calculators by next week. You will need a calulator almost everyday in my class. I am sure you are using them in other classes as well. You should use a Texas Instruments 83+ calculator or better. When you purchase a new calculator they are expensive, but you will hopefully keep the same one through college. The 83+ is still the standard and that has been around for a while and will work fine for most work you will do. You can find them on eBay or any electronics store.

Here are some things you may not knowo if you are a Freshman.

1. You are only required to be in school at the times you have exams. You must be on time (I would get there a min. of 15 minutes early.), but you can come just in time for your exam and leave afterwards.

2. The exam is slated to last 2 hours. You must stay in the room for a minimum of 1.5 hours even if you are finished.

3. If you are not taking an exam, but you have to stay at school you can only be in the cafeteria or library. No roaming the halls.

4. Bring two number 2 pencils to the exam. You may also need a caculator or a pen for some exams. (for my exam bring two pencils, two pens(if you use them) and a calculator).

Now that the game is over and you have packed away your green and white, you can get back to your review. Remember it needs to be done for tuesday I think some of you doubeted me when I was "hating" on the Eagles. My understanding of football stays true. I may choose to cheer for Oakland, but I know this game well and I know the difference between lucky and good. By the way, the statistic that says the team that beats the defending super bowl champ in the playoffs loses the next week is still perfect. Pretty amazing. Those teams are now 0 and 12!

I am getting a few questions about the lab. There was supposed to be an additional sheet, but it was not included. What I would like you to do is utilize google or some other type of search to find the information you are looking for. I want you to develop the skill of unguided research.

Here is some information about the next few days of class.
Covalent bonding guided reading (worksheet from last week) is due tomorrow (Wed.)
Any lab make ups are going to happen tomorrow (Wed.) This will be the last chance to make up any late labs. We plan on doing the golden pennies as well as the real elements labs. The flame lab can not be redone.

There is a quiz on Friday about chapter 6.

Hey guys break is less than a week away now! Many of us will be making preparations for Christmas or in the middle of Hanukkah or other celebrations. What this post is really for is to keep you up to date on the schedule.
Today you were given the periodic table of the elephants sheet. That is due on Tuesday before break. If you will not be there that day, you need to email it to me so I can give you the correct credit. Everyone will get chance to go to the computer lab to work on this either on Thursday or Friday.
Wednesday we will talk about ions and electronegativity. I will also hand out the review for the test. If you are in period 2 or 3, please bring your book to class tomorrow.
Thursday is one of the days I will be in training to use my new MacBook. (training for a computer for someone who is updating their blog from an iPhone?). On this day you will either go to the computer lab or you will work on a guided reading/study guide. It just depends on the schedule that I will talk about on class tomorrow.
Friday will be day 2 of training. Again, based upon the schedule, you will work on reviews in class or go to the computer lab.

The number of electrons in this outermost shell represents the maximum possible valence for many elements and matches the number of the group that the element occupies in the periodic table of the elements.It is the valence electrons that are involved in the formation of ionic and covalent bonds (see molecule).

There will be a test on the Monday before break begins. That will be the 22nd. If you know you are not going to be there for that day, make sure I know, since you will have to take the test on the Friday before you leave for break.

Well I hope you enjoyed the chance to act like younger kids again and color in parts of the periodic table. This may seem like it was elementary to you, but this will serve you well as a study guide to the table. You should have separated out the different groups or families. I also hope that you are slowly understanding how this table was organized and how complex but simple it can be.
The expectation for tomorrow is that you have the entire table colored and you have answered the questions. Make sure you turn your homework in. This is one place you can make up for a bad grade on a test, or augment a good grade you are already carrying.
A note on the tests...The last make ups are tomorrow after school, so I plan on having them all graded by Friday. Lets see how well this plan goes.

This week in Chem!

Monday was Parent Teacher Confrences.
Tuesday we did the Flame lab. This should have shown you another way that we begin to put the PT in some sort of order.
Wednesday is the Emmision spectra lab. What is happening here is that there is a gas (Nobel) in a glass tube. We send electricity through the tube to excite the gas. That brings about color in the gas. We will use spectroscopes to see the color signiutre that is given off by each gas. Should be pretty cool. I will also give you a few questions on this lab that are due at the latest on Thursday. If you want to check out the emmision spectra, check this site out.
Thursday is the day that I will introduce isotopes. We will take a few notes (of course) and do a few problems related to isotopes. I will also give you a review for the test. You will have a few minutes in class to work on the review, but it is for homework.
Friday we will go over the review packet, and review for the test as a whole class.
The test is on MONDAY!

Also, be aware that your Chemistry final is quickly approaching! We will have the chemistry final lab the week of Jan 12-16. The write up for that will be due on the 20th. We will review for the midterm on Jan 21-22. Your exam will be on either the 23,26, or 27th. Start reviewing and asking questions after school now!
